I love little boys. Having two of my own, I am well accustomed to what comes along with them- noise, burps, dirt, silly faces, and lots and lots of lego! But what boys also have is a sparkle and energy that makes them so much fun. And less shrieky. ;-) Maybe I am biased because I don’t have any daughters, but I really enjoy being mom to boys, and working with them in portraiture is always an adventure.

On Friday, I got to photograph James. A whole lot of hilarious personality and spunk, in a compact little 8 year old package. He made me laugh, and I swear some of the things that came out of his mouth were per comic genius! But he is also gorgeous, with these stunning blue eyes that sparkle all on their own, with no help from me.

Proof?

I just LOVE this one.

We were in Fort Langley, and since James likes trains, we went over to the train station. There is something magical about trains that boys just seem to love.

We discussed smelly boy feet too.

And he gave me some more silly faces.

And some nice ones.

There is a really funny story that goes along with this day. James’ top tooth was really wiggly, but his mom really wanted to get his pictures done before it fell out, so we scheduled it, I went out there, and when we picked James up from school, there he was with a big ol’ gap. The story was it came out “right at the end of the day” and he was really sorry, he tried to keep it in. Then the truth came out…another boy pulled it out, but even funnier was that it took a few tries before it came out! James let him do it, and once his mom found out, I think he was a little embarrassed at being caught! Boys. They are impulsive and sometimes us moms wonder where their brains are…Regardless, I think the toothless gap is great. They are so cute when they have missing teeth!

But then it was time for my favourite part of the day. The sun was getting lower, it was beautiful and warm, and glowy, and I had this vision that required a field with long grass. We found one, and James got to dress up. I got the exact shots I was hoping for, James got to be a viking, and wield a sword/axe and I could have shot until it got dark, the light was so beautiful. These are the times when going overtime on sessions is just so worth it!

The helmet was a bit big…lol

And one final shot…The warm glow of the sun is just stunning, against the long grass and his blond hair.

Tara I hope you like the preview, and there are plenty more that are just as great, and I am so excited for you to see the rest of your proofs!

I only commented on your FB post because I saw it first, Silly! These are freaking awesome, and I love, love, LOVE them! As I’ve told you before, I am seriously dreaming of the day that I can afford to fly your butt out to CA so you can do a huge photo shoot of me and Kristine. I’m thinking beautiful daughter shots, awesome mother and daughter photos, and, of course, the boudoir sitting just for me. ;-) You are amazing, as always!

I know it’s probably silly to stare at pictures of my child and sigh with happiness, but that’s what I’ve been doing.
Thanks, Tracie, for capturing James perfectly – his drama, his sweetness, his goofy charm. And his sparkly blue eyes :)

it’s one thing to be a photographer and it’s another to be an artist, lucky you!, you have the gift of both.
